Slot Machine Terminology: Plain English Meanings for Real Play !

Opening an online slot paytable can feel like trying to read a foreign language. RTP, variance, scatters, wilds? No wonder these mysterious acronyms cause confusion. Flatten the learning curve with my comprehensive guide to slot machine terms for beginners and play 'in the know' from your first spin.
Why these slot terms confuse players
Many players misunderstand common terms. People often think RTP guarantees a certain payout per session and that high volatility means a slot is rigged - but these are myths. As an experienced player, I won't hit that spin button until I've checked the paytable for symbols, pay structure, RTP, and volatility to make sure it matches my play style and budget. And once you're done here, neither will you. Let's get to it.
Core numbers shaping gameplay
Slot machine terms RTP, volatility, and hit frequency are notorious for bamboozling new players and even those who've been playing for years. So let's clear up the confusion already.
RTP (Return To Player) is the percentage of played funds a slot pays back over millions of spins. It's a long term guide, not a guarantee for a single session. I usually stick with slots that have an RTP of 96% (about average) or above.
Volatility (or variance) is a measure of how wins are paid. Low volatility slots pay small wins frequently (eg. Starburst). High volatility slots pay larger amounts less often (eg. Big Bass Splash). I use RTP as a filter, then check volatility to match my mood. Low volatility for a casual session, high volatility for a bigger budget and patience.
Hit frequency is simply how often wins occur. Note that a 'win' may be smaller than your stake. Common hit frequencies are 1 in 3 (eg. Starburst) and 1 in 5 (eg. Book of Dead).
Quick reference table
Metric | Where seen | What it affects | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
Return To Player (RTP) | Paytable | Percentage payout over long term | "How much you'll win per session" |
Volatility/Variance | Paytable | Small, frequent wins versus larger, rarer wins | "How much the game is rigged" |
Hit Frequency | Online discussions, rarely elsewhere | How often wins are paid | "Higher hit frequency means you'll win more" |
Paylines, ways, and Megaways
Paylines determine how symbols need to land in order to trigger a win. In most slots, these run from left to right, like the 10 paylines in Book of Dead. Some slots, like Starburst, pay in both directions.
'Ways to win' are more flexible: matching symbols can land in any arrangement on adjacent reels, like in 243-ways slot Immortal Romance.
In Megaways slots like Bonanza Megaways, each reel holds a variable number of symbols (usually between 2 and 7), resulting in thousands of ways to win that change on every spin.
I always check this structure in the paytable as it completely changes how a slot looks and plays.
Symbols and feature language
Slot reels are filled with symbols, but not all symbols are created equal. Beyond the standard low value and high value symbols, there are two main special symbols: wild symbols and scatter symbols.
Wild symbols
Wild symbols serve as a substitute for other symbols to create a winning payline out of an otherwise losing one. Design-wise, they tend to stand out against the other symbols, e.g. the multicoloured flower wild in Starburst.
Wilds can also vary in their appearance: on every reel, only some reels, only in the feature, or sometimes not at all. Some wilds even have specific abilities, such as expanding to cover other reels or rows, triggering free respins, or adding multipliers to wins they're involved in.
Scatter symbols
At least one page of a slot's paytable is usually dedicated to the scatters. These are the symbols I scope out first as they unlock the features. Similar to wilds, scatters are unique in their design, setting them apart from standard symbols (e.g. the Book of Dead scatter (and wild) is a gold tomb). They also play differently: as the name suggests, scatters trigger the feature when the required number make an appearance anywhere on the reels (so no payline arrangements needed). Sometimes they have their own payouts too.
Bonus features
Scatters often unlock free spins, which play at your current bet value. You might see increasing multipliers, as in Bonanza Megaways, or a cash collect mechanism, like in Big Bass Bonanza. In Wolf Gold, scatters unlock 'hold and win' bonus rounds, where you have 3 lives to fill the reel set with the same symbol.
Base game features also exist, like random respins in King Kong Cash, and mystery symbols in Razor Returns. One of my favourite features is avalanches (aka tumbles, cascades). In Gonzo's Quest, avalanches mean winnings symbols disappear and new ones fall down, potentially leading to chain reaction wins.
Jackpots explained simply
While fixed jackpots pay out a set amount under the right trigger, progressive jackpots start at a seed amount and grow as players spin until they're triggered.
Some more modern jackpot slots, like Red Tiger's network jackpots, have a 'must drop by' label, which means the jackpot is set to trigger at least once during the advertised period (eg. 24 hours, 1 week, 1 month). Bear in mind, that isn't a guarantee - no jackpot is ever 'due to hit'.
While you may need to bet a minimum amount to be eligible for the jackpot, betting bigger does not always increase your chances. Also, playing progressive jackpot slots is not necessarily better value for money. In many cases, the RTP is lower due to the fact that a proportion of every spin goes towards the jackpot itself.
Mini practical glossary
To finish off, here's a handy slot machine terms list you can bookmark and come back to whenever you need it:

The percentage of total played funds that are paid out to players over the course of millions of spins.
- "I always check the RTP of a slot before spinning."
Volatility/Variance
A measure of how a slot's wins are paid, from small, frequent wins (low) to larger, rarer wins (high).
- "I fancied a longer session, so I chose a low volatility slot."
Hit frequency
How often wins occur, calculated as the total winning combinations divided by the total possible combinations, expressed as a fraction, ratio, or percentage.
- "This slot has a low hit frequency, so I expect longer dry spells between wins."
Payline
A specific arrangement or line along which matching symbols must land to trigger a win.
- "I reduced my bet per payline to make my budget last longer."
Ways (to win)
A more modern system in which matching symbols can be in any position on adjacent reels to win.
- "This slot has 243 ways to win."
Megaways
Big Time Gaming's unique mechanism that allows each reel to contain variable numbers of symbols (usually 2 to 7) on every spin, resulting in up to hundreds of thousands of ways to win.
- "The horizontal reel on Extra Chilli Megaways adds an extra row of symbols to reels 2, 3, 4, and 5."
Fixed jackpot
A set prize amount that never changes, usually triggered by landing a specific symbol combination.
- "This slot has four fixed jackpots."
Progressive jackpot
A jackpot that starts at a seed value and grows by a proportion of each player's bet until it's won.
- "Mega Moolah is a popular series of progressive jackpot slots."
Wild symbol
A special symbol that stands in for others to create a winning line.
- "A wild symbol landed on reel 3 to complete my matching line."
Scatter symbol
A special symbol that triggers a bonus feature when a set number of them appear anywhere on the reels at once.
- "The gold tomb scatter symbol appeared on reels 2, 3, and 5 to unlock the free spins feature."
Autoplay
A slot setting that allows players to automatically spin the reels a set number of times.
- "The UK Gambling Commission banned the autoplay setting to help players maintain control of their spending."
Multiplier
A booster that multiplies wins by a set amount, such as 2x, 5x, or 10x.
- "I got a 5x win multiplier during the free spins feature."
Cascades/Tumbles/Avalanches
A special slot mechanism that removes symbols involved in a win, with those above falling into their place, potentially triggering a chain reaction of additional wins.
- "The avalanches in Gonzo's Quest make the slot more enjoyable to play."
