I’m a big fan of the Lil’ Demon slot franchise and was so excited when I discovered that a new game was coming to OJO’s online casino featuring the Gold Trio mechanic. That game is, of course, Gold Trio: Lil’ Demon.

The main character in the series is – you guessed it – a little (red) demon and the theme is typically hellfire inspired. Specifically, the Gold Trio Lil Demon slot machine has 5 reels, 3 rows, and 30 paylines and was developed by Playtech’s Ash Gaming Studio. The setting is a fiery cave, and the hell/demon theme is carried throughout the game’s visuals. This includes the icons on the reels like pitchforks and playing card symbols with devil tails. Gold Trio Respins

Gold Trio Respins can be triggered in one of two ways:

1. At random in the main game when any coloured coin lands on the reels

2. You buy the feature (more on that later)

There are three coloured coin symbols that can land on the reels during any spin in the main game: Blue Coin, Red Coin, Green Coin. In the main game, each one can increase the amount of gold in its respective pot above the reels, and any of the coloured coins can randomly trigger the Gold Trio Respins. That said, landing a coloured coin doesn’t automatically trigger the feature.

Each coloured coin also has a unique ability. During the Gold Trio Respins, these unique abilities activate if the coin is locked on the reels. They are:

• Blue Coin – Gains a random cash coin value that’s added to every coin present on the reels.

• Red Coin – Multiplies the value of all coins on the reels on the same spin by 2x before turning into a Cash Coin.

• Green Coin – Gains a value equal to the sum of all coins locked on the reels on the same spin in which it lands.

The feature begins with any coloured coins that triggered it plus a minimum of 3 coins locked on the reels (max is 5 locked coins if the feature is triggered with 3 pots). It starts with 3 respins. During every spin, all unlocked symbol positions spin independently. If 1 or more new coin symbols land, they’ll lock in place and the respins will reset to 3.

During the Gold Trio Respins feature, it’s possible for any of the game’s coins to land except the Grand Prize Coin. These include Fire Coin (this will trigger the Fire Wheel feature), Cash Coins (up to 5x multiplier value), and Special Prize Coins (award the Mini, Minor or Major cash prizes). If you fill the entire reel grid with coins during the feature, you’ll be awarded the game’s top payout – the Grand Prize of 1,000x your total bet.

All this may sound confusing, but it all makes sense when you play and it’s a lot of fun. I triggered this feature twice during my gaming session, resulting in a sizeable cash coin win during one and the Fire Wheel in another where I won the Minor prize.

Buy Feature

Since landing a coloured coin symbol doesn’t guarantee the Gold Trio Respins feature will trigger, some players prefer to purchase the feature outright. This can be done by selecting the “Buy Feature” button to the right of the reelset, directly below the coins icon.

There are different feature prices and the cost of each is determined by the size of your current total bet. Keep in mind however, that while buying the feature will instantly trigger it, that does not mean you are guaranteed a big payout or one that’s more than or equal to the amount you paid to trigger it.

Fire Wheel

The Fire Coin is your ticket to the Fire Wheel feature. This coin can land during the main game and during the respins feature.

When the feature is active, the Fire Wheel can award one of the following prizes:

• 1, 2, or 3 golden pots – Triggers Gold Trio Respins feature during the main game. If a pot is won during Gold Trio Respins, the Fire Coin on the reels will transform into a coloured coin of the colour of any revealed pots and activate its unique ability.

• Mini Cash Prize – 10x

• Minor Cash Prize – 20x

• Major Cash Prize – 50x

• Grand Cash Prize – 1,000x

In the main game, landing the Fire Coin may randomly trigger the feature. If triggered, any Fire Wheel prize you win is awarded instantly.

During respins the Fire Coin instantly activates the Fire Wheel feature and any cash prize won on the Fire Wheel is awarded at the end of the respins feature.

Demon’s Feature

Another potential perk of the Gold Trio Lil Demon slot game is the Demon’s Feature.

On any spin (main game or respins feature) the Lil Demon can randomly add coloured coins symbols or add a Fire Coin symbol to the reels.

My verdict

The Gold Trio Lil Demon online slot is a fun addition to the Lil’ Demon slot series and my new favourite of the bunch. Unlike other Playtech games like Buffalo Blitz: Cash Collect, Gold Trio Lil Demon isn’t as complex in terms of its overall gameplay and features. So, while it’s still feature-rich and engaging, it’s not as daunting for new slots players. Additionally, the $0.20 - $150 bet range makes it an optimal choice for an array of bankroll sizes. All in all, it’s a great game most players will enjoy.
