Four Leaf Gaming went all out on the visuals for this game. From the Viking symbols on the reels to the beautiful winter landscape that serves as the backdrop, this one’s easy on the eyes. As for the audio, it’s well suited to the theme while the sound effects (like the axe hitting a target) add an extra immersive touch.

At first glance, you’ll notice there’s a lot going on with the Bloodaxe game. There are five targets above the reels, and to the left of the reel set is a large wheel as well as a “Game & Fortune” option. The wheel I’ll discuss in the features section of this Bloodaxe slot review (along with other features like free spins, Bloodaxe Spins, and Super Spinner). As for Game & Fortune”, selecting it allows you to:

• Activate Nitro Spins (increases your bet by 50% or costs 4 coins per spin) – Gives you a higher chance of landing more Wild axes, collecting more coins, and free spins scatters.

• Activate Free Spins (buy the feature for 78x current bet or 650 coins) – Gives you direct access to the bonus round.

• Activate Super Spinner (buy the feature for 60x current bet or 500 coins) – Immediately activates the wheel and you can spin for a prize.

The coins you can use to purchase these features are collected as you spin the reels. They land at random on low-paying symbols.

It should come as no surprise that the Wild Axe symbol is one of the prominent features in Bloodaxe. When a Wild hits a reel, an axe is launched at the target above that reel. Depending on where it lands on the target, the reel collector is filled by 1, 2, or 3 points. If 4 points are collected, 4 Respins are awarded with an expanding wild on the reel.

During respins, if another reel’s target collection is filled, that reel will also become fully wild and the respins counter is reset to 4. Since wilds substitute all other symbols save the Scatter, respins have the potential to land some nice-sized wins. During my gaming session, I turned three reels wild.

Free Spins

As is the case with the most thrilling online slots, the Relax Gaming Bloodaxe slot has a free spins feature. And, because it’s a Four Leaf Gaming slot, there’s a lot more to this feature than simply being awarded a few free spins of the reels.

For starters, Bloodaxe free spins are triggered by landing a minimum of 3 scatters (Viking rune symbol). Landing 3 gets you 10 spins, 4 awards 15, and 5 gives you 20. You can also purchase the feature directly by buying it for 78x your current bet.

Prior to the free spins round starting, a Bonus Booster activates. This gives you the opportunity to keep the spins you were initially awarded or gamble to win 1, 2, or 3 extra spins. You can gamble multiple times. The maximum number than can be won is a total of 25 free spins. The most I won was 10.

Once you enter the free spins round, target collections above the reels are reset at the start of the feature, but after that they won’t reset for the entire bonus round. During free spins if you collect 4 points, you are awarded 4 Bloodaxe Spins. At the start of the Bloodaxe Spins, a number of wilds are added to each reel in random positions, with every reel receiving the same number of wilds as it has points during the free spins round. All wilds are sticky until the Bloodaxe Spins end. Any reels that have collected 4 points also get a 2x multiplier. When more than one multiplier is linked to a win, the multiplier values are added together.

Finally, when the free spins round is complete, a Bonus Replay triggers. This gives you the option to gamble your winnings for a chance to replay them. A losing spin returns you to the base game, while a winning spin grants you entrance to a new round of free spins. However, a word of caution – winnings from your previous free spins will not be carried over to the new free spins round. Personally, I always opted out of Bonus Replay.

Super Spinner

This is the giant wheel that can be seen to the left of the reels in the base game. It can be triggered at random any time a coin is collected. You also have the option to purchase it for 60x the bet.

When activated, you give the wheel a spin and eventually it stops on a prize. The possible prizes include:

Vikings Go Berzerk

My verdict

I enjoyed playing the Bloodaxe slot, with the visuals and Wild Axe Respins being my favourite elements of the game. However, not all players will like Bloodaxe’s additional betting options and high volatility. If you plan to play it organically (without buying bonuses), you will need patience as you’re likely to encounter long featureless dry spells. Still, I think this slot is worth a spin. There’s plenty of action and different mechanics that keeps the experience fast paced and engaging.
