I didn’t find that the free spins games were triggered too frequently, but they were fun when they did, and there was so much else going on with the sticky frames and the wilds that play remained fresh and exciting.

That said, there is a Feature Buy option that let me buy into the free spins bonus game when I was ready for that experience. That feature lets you purchase 10 free spins and the same overall experience as if the free spins bonus game had been triggered by landing at least three of the scatters.

I genuinely enjoyed the basic play for this game just as much as the free spins bonus round in terms of fun. If you like Games Global games packed with different features, then you’re going to want to give this one a try.

Nudging Scatter Respins

This is a game feature that can be triggered if 2 scatters land during a single spin, anywhere on the top three rows of the board. Each of the reels that contain at least one of the scatter symbols will be held. During each new spin, the rest of the reels turn as the held rows drop by one symbol at a time until the scatters are gone off the bottom row of the board or 5 scatters land.

If, by the end of the spins, there are 2 scatter symbols remaining on the reels following a respin, a token is added to the Free Spins Booster, another feature on this list.

Free Spins Scatters

The free spins scatter symbols can appear anywhere on the reels during a spin. Landing 3, 4, or 5 of the symbols in one spin (or during one of the nudging scatter respins) launches the free spins bonus game. Having landed 3 scatters wins 10 free spins, 4 scatters wins 15 free spins, and 6 scatters wins 20 free spins.

When the free spins bonus game is triggered, any of the wilds frames that have accumulated on the board throughout base play will remain in place.

I liked that even if I didn’t get enough of these scatters to trigger a free spins bonus game, having landed 2 in a single spin (or having 2 remain on the board during the nudge scatter respins) helps to build up the level of the Free Spins Booster metre, which is present just above the reels.

Free Spins Booster

The free spins booster is located on the screen above the reels as a metre that is gradually filled throughout play. Landing 2 scatter symbols adds a token to the metre. When 50 tokens have been collected, the first free spins trail level is unlocked. That awards you with 5 more free spins and a 2x multiplier.

When the metre is filled, it can be used in the free spins bonus game. Once that game is completed, the metre resets.

Wild Symbols

Wild symbols aren’t necessarily anything unique when you play some of the most popular slots in Canada. That said, what made this game stand out to me in this area was that there were two kinds of wild symbols, and they leave behind sticky frames.

The two kinds of wild symbols are the green fish and the purple fish. Both will substitute any of the symbols on the board except the scatter symbols and the Angler symbols, helping to create combinations for wins. The number of wild symbols you land determines the payout. That is, landing 3, 4, or 5 of the wild symbols will lead to a direct payout win of 2x, 5x, or 20x respectively.

Regardless of whether you land green or purple wilds, they leave behind a sticky frame around their positions. Those stay in place until the Angler symbol lands. A symbol landing in a sticky frame has a 1x multiplier value. That said, if a wild symbol lands within a sticky frame, it will boost the frame to a 2x multiplier. Every time another wild symbol lands within the frame, it increases by another 1x, to a 5x maximum.

If a purple wild lands, that fish spawns, creating more wilds or one more purple wild where it lands, leaving behind more sticky frames.

Angler Wild Bonus

The Angler wild bonus was my favourite part of the Unusual Catch slot game experience. It is triggered any time the Angler symbol lands in any position on the reels following a spin. This feature fills all the sticky frames with wild symbols. Any wilds or multipliers that were applied throughout the play up to that point are applied to any winning combination that occurs during that spin.

What was very exciting was that this feature can be triggered regardless of whether you’re in base play or whether you’re in the free spins bonus game.
