I quickly noticed when first loading the game that the overall layout and design of the Mermajesty slot machine is fairly standard, with 5 reels, 3 rows (5x3) and 25 paylines. After my first spin, I immediately appreciated how its aquatic/fantasy theme is reflected throughout gameplay. You’ll hear it in the soft soundtrack and bubbly sound effects while the underwater background and symbols on the reels complete the visual experience.

The Mermajesty slots symbols are what you might expect from an ocean-fantasy inspired game— a dolphin, fish, starfish, octopus, gold treasure, and a majestic mermaid who acts as the games Wild symbol. Other special symbols include a Cockle Shell (Scatter symbol), a Pink Pearl and Gold Pearl (Link&Win symbols), and Seaweed (which reveals either a Mermaid or Pearl).

Although you can play this slot for as little as $0.25 a spin (I’m more of a $1.00 spinner), the Mermajesty game is one of OJO’s high volatility online slots. What this means is there’s a chance to win big payouts in a single spin, but the slot’s overall hit frequency is low. So, while it’s possible to hit Mermajesty’s 1,000x the bet max payout, don’t expect it to come easy. Landing any decent-sized payout could take hundreds of spins (as was the case when I played).

As such, Mermajesty’s low hit frequency and more complex features, like Link&Win (I explain how it works in the features section below), might not appeal to some players. This may include new players, low bettors, or those interested in straightforward slots play. However, if you like high volatility, the option to bet a max $100 per spin, and feature variety with your play, then you’ll probably enjoy swimming with this mermaid.

Wild and Seaweed Symbols

Two symbols you’ll want to watch out for right off the bat are the Mermaid and Seaweed symbols.

The Mermaid is the Wild and can appear stacked on any of the reels except reel 1. If stacked and a part of a winning combo, the Wild symbols will transform into a fully animated version of the mermaid, which is a nice touch. What’s an even nicer touch is that all wins she’s a part of are multiplied 2x!

As for the Seaweed – which can also appear on all reels except reel 1 – if any of these symbols are present at the end of a spin, the seaweed will open to reveal either a Pearl or Mermaid symbol, boosting your chances of a win or triggering the Link&Win feature.

Link & Win

In Mermajesty, the Link&Win feature can be triggered in both the base game and during Mermajesty Free Spins. To trigger it in the base game, you’ll need to land a minimum of 6 mixed Link&Win symbols.

There are two Link&Win symbols:

• Pink Pearls – Display a prize of 1x to 8x the bet

• Gold Pearls – Display a prize of 10x to 80x the bet or one of the 3 fixed jackpot prizes Major (100x), Minor (50x), or Mini (20x)

The Link&Win feature begins with 3 spins. Each pearl symbol that lands on the reels sticks in place until the end of the feature. If another pearl lands during one of the spins, the spin count resets to 3.

The feature ends when either the final spin is played or every position on the reels is filled with a Link&Win symbol. If it’s the former, all prizes are collected from the symbols and awarded. If it’s the latter (and all positions are filled), the Grand Jackpot Prize of 1000x the bet is awarded.

The Link&Win feature is my favourite of the game, and resulted in my biggest Mermajesty slot win…but remember when I said that you might need to play hundreds of spins before landing a decent sized win in this slot? When I triggered the Mermajesty Link&Win feature I’d already played over 200 spins. It’s important to manage your bankroll based on the size of the playing budget you can afford, set limits, and play responsibly.

Free Spins

The Games Global Mermajesty slot also has a free spins feature. Triggering it requires landing the Cockle Shells (Scatter symbol). Landing 3 will trigger 6 spins, 4 will get you 9 spins, and 5 results in 15.

During free spins, the middle reels (2, 3, and 4) are merged into one huge reel with giant symbols. Each giant symbol (except giant pearls) count as 9 symbols. Landing a Giant Cockle Shell will give you an extra 3 spins. Landing a giant Gold Pearl symbol will trigger the Link&Win feature.

My verdict

I really like playing Mermajesty. It’s got a nice theme, an uncomplicated design, a decent bet range ($0.25 - $100 per spin), and a variety of features that keep the game interesting, even during dry spells. While it certainly won’t be the top choice for all Canadians – especially new players or those who prefer lower volatility – for those who enjoy higher risk and less conventional features, it could be your next favourite game.
