At laaaaaaast! The wait is (almost) over – The Masked Singer is returning! Everybody’s favourite mystery singing show is set to hit our screens at the start of 2022, with plenty more crazy costumes and surprises to look forward to.

The stage is set and we can’t wait! So we’ve gathered all the information you need to make sure you don’t miss out on a second of the action.

When does The Masked Singer return?

ITV chiefs had been keeping the return date under their hats for some time. There were whispers that the show was coming back for its third installment just after Christmas. But they’ve finally revealed when it’s back and we’ve got good news and bad news.

The bad news is you’re going to have to wait until next year to see it. The good news, however, is you won’t be waiting long. The first episode of series three will air at 7pm on Saturday 1st January. And the second episode will air the very next day, gifting you a double dose of The Masked Singer to start 2022 in style.

How does The Masked Singer work?

We’re sure you’re all well aware of the concept of the show. But just in case you’ve been living under a rock, we’ll explain. The line-up consists of 12 celebrities, with each of them hidden within one of the incredible unique costumes. Every week, the celebrities will take turns to sing and the studio audience then votes for their favourite. The two celebrities with the least votes take part in a sing-off, before the panel of judges choose one of them to go home.

The celebrity that leaves the competition is then ‘unmasked’, revealing their identity. But it’s not just a singing competition – before each performance, the celebrity narrates a VT, providing clues about who they are, with the judges then given the chance to guess who’s behind the mask.

Incredibly, of the hundreds of people that work on the show, only a handful of them know who the celebrities are. For more behind-the-scenes insight, check out our Masked Singer Facts blog post.

Who are the judges?

Once again, the panel for the new series will consist of Jonathan Ross, Davina McCall, Rita Ora and Mo Gilligan. Series two also featured guest judges for the later episodes, including Alan Carr, Matt Lucas and series 1 winner Nicola Roberts . We’ll have to wait and see if that happens again this time around! Also, as ever, The Masked Singer will be presented by comedian Joel Dommett.

Who won series 2 of The Masked Singer?

The last series of The Masked Singer took place earlier this year and included plenty of big names, including former England footballer Glenn Hoddle, comedian Lenny Henry and presenter Sue Perkins. But it was Joss Stone who blew the judges away. The singer went on to be crowned the winner, dressed as the loveable Sausage. Ne-Yo came in second dressed as Badger, while JLS star Aston Merrygold scooped third place as Robin.
