But there’s no need to panic. Your fashion gurus over at OJO HQ have put together a handy guide on what to wear to a casino (and what not to wear), so you’ll never be caught short.
White Tie – for when you want to look like royalty
Don’t worry if you’ve never been invited to a white tie event because there aren’t many of us that have. They’re pretty rare and are only reserved for the grandest of high-class events. Not even the Royal Box at Ascot requires white tie dress. However, in case you ever somehow come across a casino with a strict dress code, you’ll need to know what to wear.
Men should wear evening tailcoats on top of a stiff white shirt, a white waistcoat and, of course, a white bow tie. High-waisted trousers are essential, while a top hat, white gloves and a dress cane are optional extras. Women would be expected to don a grand ball gown with opulent jewellery – just imagine a wedding dress, with the option of adding gloves and a tiara. We told you it was fancy!
Black Tie – for the classy places
Luckily, black tie events are the fanciest most of us will ever have to dress for. This will generally be the dress code at the top casinos. Picture James Bond in Casino Royale and you’ll get a pretty good idea of what black tie dress is. Sadly though, we’re not all lucky enough to have Daniel Craig’s dashing looks!
Black tie dress code for women is not as strict as it once was. However, they’re still required to wear a ball-gown or a cocktail dress. Meanwhile, men are required to match a white dress shirt with a black bow tie, waistcoat, dinner jacket and dress shoes.
Casinos also often have an optional black tie dress code. This essentially means wear black tie if you can, but you can get away with wearing a dark suit with a tie.
Business Formal – for when you want to make a good impression
Good news, guys – plenty of casinos don’t need you to dress up too smart. But you’ll still need to make an effort! When it comes to what to wear to a casino, most places will operate with a business formal dress code. This is generally how you’ll see people in corporate sectors dressing for work.
Men will be expected to sport a good suit, with a jacket, shirt, tie and smart shoes. Women can wear a feminine suit, a cocktail dress or a business style dress, often with a jacket. However, if the dress code is business casual, men can feel free to lose the tie, while ladies can ditch the jacket.
Smart Casual – for a relaxed night out
A trip to the casino doesn’t have to be the extravagant event that is often portrayed in films, which is why a smart casual dress code has become so popular. It’s just a step up from being scruffy, meaning you’re good to go as long as you’re dressed reasonably presentably.
Smart jeans or chinos matched with a casual shirt or polo shirt is more than fine for men, while a summer dress, a skirt or a pair of jeans is acceptable for women. It really is anything goes, as long as you’re not wearing your pyjamas or dirty trainers.
